Singaporeans rallied behind Dr Chee

Good news. Dr Chee Soon Juan won’t be going to prison after all.

It’s not because the Singapore government decided to let him go. It’s simply because Singaporeans rallied online and donated the $20,000 fine.

And as usual SPH reports selectively. They played down the fact that ordinary Singaporeans donated the money and didn’t even report about the statement from Human Rights Watch. It shouldn’t come to this.

From Human Rights:

The Singaporean government is once again abusing the justice system and trampling on basic rights to remove an opposition politician from the political playing field,” said Phil Robertson, deputy Asia director of Human Rights Watch.

The government should end this persecution of Dr. Chee and show that free speech is not a dead letter in Singapore.

Would the government stop there. Maybe for now. Wait until after elections.
